'We just want to be a family,' says Oregon's pregnant man

'We just want to be a family,' says Oregon's pregnant man-Thomas Beatie's sex change treatment made him legally male, but he retained his female reproductive organs and he's not afraid to use them.

The mountain town of Bend, Oregon is not exactly famous for its progressive attitudes to sexual identity and family values. It's a part of the United States where men are expected to be men. They wear cowboy hats; carry hunting rifles in their pick-up trucks; and have partners who are both female and heterosexual.

So, when Thomas Beatie came out last week with the bombshell news that, first, he was a female-to-male transsexual and, second, he was five months pregnant, it didn't exactly prompt the local populace to throw him a ticker-tape parade.

In fact, it stirred a national, and international furore. Could the news possibly be true, or was this just another "pregnant man" hoax like others that have popped up in the news media over the years? Beatie's neighbours, who assumed he was a regular guy with a wife and a small business, expressed both shock and scepticism when approached by reporters.

Beatie himself vanished after the publication of his announcement, which he made in the "First Person" column of the gay, lesbian and transgender magazine The Advocate. A "closed" sign hung over the door of his screen-printing business (intriguingly called Define Normal) and nobody appeared to be at the home he shares with his wife Nancy.

His story is remarkable – though not without precedent, according to hormone and reproductive health specialists. Born Tracy Lagondino in Hawaii, he underwent a sex change about 10 years ago and became legally male, although he chose to keep his female reproductive organs. He lost his breasts and developed facial hair, which he trimmed into a neat beard.

He and Nancy, who have been together for as long as he has been a man, moved to Oregon two years ago and decided to start a family. Nancy had had a hysterectomy and was unable to conceive, so the task of getting pregnant fell to him.

He stopped taking testosterone, waited several months for his menstrual cycle to resume, and set about the business of artificial insemination.

A first pregnancy almost killed him – he conceived triplets ectopically and had to undergo emergency surgery. But now, according to his first-person account, he is pregnant with a child, a girl, who is due in July.

The Advocate said it had checked with Beatie's doctor to make sure his story was true, and several med

ical experts have come forward to say his pregnancy is within the bounds of medical possibility. A photo accompanying his piece on The Advocate website, above, shows him naked from the waist up with a bulge in his belly.

Legal, social and political challenges have been considerable, and likely to get worse now the story is out.

"Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs," he wrote.

"Health care professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognise Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy's family don't even know I'm transgender."

He has dealt with nine doctors to date, including one who questioned whether he was fit to be a parent and another who bowed out saying he didn't want to work with "someone like me". When his own brother found out about the end of the ectopic pregnancy, he said it was a good thing and allegedly added: "Who knows what kind of monster it would have been."

Beatie's first-person account stressed that the desire for a child is universal, and suggested he had as much right to conceive and bear one as anybody else. "Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire, but a human desire," he wrote. "To Nancy, I am her husband carrying our child. I will be my daughter's father, and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family."

It lies in the Levern Valley at the southwestern edge of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Neilston is a dormitory village comprising a resident population of just over 5,000 people. Neilston is mentioned in documents as early as the 12th century, and its early history is marked by its status as an important ecclesiastical parish linked with Paisley Abbey to the north. Neilston Parish Church—a Category B listed building—has lain at the centre of the community since 1163. The urbanisation and development of Neilston largely coincided with the Industrial Revolution. Industrial-scale textile processing was introduced to Neilston around the middle of the 18th century with the construction of several cotton mills. Although known as a former milling village, agriculture has, and continues to play, an economic role for Neilston. The annual Neilston Agricultural Show is an important trading and cultural event for farmers from southwest Scotland each spring. Although heavy industry demised during the latter half of the 20th century, as part of Scotland’s densely populated Central Belt, Neilston has continued to grow as a commuter village, supported by its position between Paisley and Glasgow, from roughly 1,000 people in 1800 to 5,168 in 2001. California Scrutinizes Juicy Campus Web Site for Potential Legal Violations

California Scrutinizes Juicy Campus Web Site for Potential Legal Violations-Online gossip forum JuicyCampus.com came under attack this past week after state officials charged that the Web site’s “always anonymous and always juicy” posts violate consumer protection laws.

California officials are now attempting to launch a fraud investigation following legal action taken last week by the attorney general offices of New Jersey and Connecticut. After the two states charged JuicyCampus.com with violating its own terms and conditions and misleading users, California Assemblyman Alberto Torrico authored a letter to Attorney General Edmund G. Brown requesting an investigation.

JuicyCampus.com is an online forum where students can anonymously post “juicy” gossip concerning their respective college communities. The site contains pages of rumors that users can read, reply to and rank in terms of “juiciness.”

The majority of the posts target the greek system and range from remarks about favorite rock bands to allegations of sexual impropriety and drug abuse. In the past few months the site has created controversy at other schools such as Pepperdine University, where the student government called for a ban on the Web site from school servers, and at Loyola Marymount University, where a student was arrested on charges that he posted a death threat on JuicyCampus.com.

In a written statement to the attorney general, Torrico described Juicy Campus as a “dangerous campus gossip Web site that may be spreading libelous information, propagating hate speech, and endangering the safety of women on campuses across the state.” Torrico demanded an aggressive investigation to determine whether the site was violating consumer protection laws and state civil rights.

While the user conduct section of JuicyCampus.com’s terms and conditions prohibits users from posting any content that is defamatory, obscene, libelous or invasive of another’s privacy and threatens to report violators to applicable authorities, the site does not monitor content.

The New Jersey and Connecticut general attorney offices say that because Juicy Campus claims to ban libelous content - but fails to enforce this policy - it violates its own terms and conditions.

However, according to Matt Ivester, CEO and founder of JuicyCampus.com, the site does not claim to self-police by screening material or removing posts.

“Nowhere is it stated that we will remove content from the Web site,” Ivester said. “We ask in our terms and conditions for users not to post defamatory material but in section six we state there is no screening of content. The idea we are not following our own terms and conditions is ridiculous.”

Additionally Ivester said the Web site is legally shielded by both the First Amendment and the 1996 Communications and Decency Act Section 230, which provides immunity from liability for providers of an interactive computer service who publish information provided by others.

“I am very confident we have not violated any laws,” Ivester said.

Still, Robin Unander, an Associated Students Legal Resource Center attorney, charged that JuicyCampus.com is deceiving users and may be subject to less stringent legal interpretations.

“JuicyCampus.com is misleading users,” Unander said. “On one hand they claim to protect people but they are talking out their mouth and ass because there is no way people can take down the posts. … Laws are meant to be broadly interpreted. New Jersey and Connecticut are applying [consumer protection] laws in a liberal sense and saying JuicyCampus.com is talking out both ends and they need to decide to protect users or not have a disclaimer on their site.”

UCSB Interfraternity Council President J.P. Primeau, said that in the absence of immediate legal alternatives, the greek community has decided to disregard the site.

“Everything on the site is bullshit rumors and hearsay so we found the best thing to do is act like the site does not exist,” Primeau said.

Meanwhile Ivester said JuicyCampus.com will continue to operate despite any pending investigations.

“We are continuing business as usual,” Ivester said. “We are confident we will not be bullied and we won’t let the attorney general violate the free speech rights of our users.”

The Legend of Zelda Movie Trailer

The Legend of Zelda Movie Shots-When I first started bathing in movie news and updates via the Internet around ten years ago I used to be easily susceptible to foolish pranks. For fellow film geeks, movie websites were notorious for dropping a tidbit of movie news that the public was rock hard waiting to hear, only to find out later it was a malicious prank to help even out the bombastic traditions of April Fool’s.

Today, I’ve grown to become a cynical man. That’s why when making the rounds today online, when I came across the movie trailer for The Legend of Zelda I didn’t let my heart beat any faster. A project that legendary wouldn’t have snuck past my radar. Not now that I’m seasoned veteran in geekdom I knew the score.

Regardless, It’s a pretty ambitious and expensive prank and I admire the good people at IGN for coming up with it.

According to the report, the fantasy adaptation of Zelda is being written and directed by newcomer Sam Balcomb.

The character of Link will be played by JR Killigrew, Camille C. Brown will portray Princess Zelda, and Gregory Lee Kenyon is set to play Ganondorf. No mention of who will be playing Navi; according to the IGN report.

I'd love to see a Legend of Zelda movie!
