Good Friday opening

Good Friday opening-Thousands of betting shops in England, Scotland and Wales will open for the first time on a Good Friday.

The move follows the Gambling Act 2005, which came into force last year, which allows bookmakers to open every day except Christmas.

The BBC reports almost all Ladbrokes and Coral's betting shops will be open, and around 10% of William Hill's branches.

There is no horse racing in Britain but customers will be able to bet on sports such as foreign horse racing and British greyhounds.

The Salvation Army has in the past voiced fears the Act will bring increased opportunities to gamble and the "normalisation" of an addictive activity.

A statement on bookmakers William Hill's website said it would open "approximately 10%" of its shops.

Spokesman Graham Sharpe said: "For the first time we will be opening some 200 of our branches on Good Friday from 10am to 6pm.

"All the staff in those branches will be working voluntarily. Customers will be able to bet on, among a wide selection of events, live foreign horse racing and live British greyhound racing."
