Hogan's Heroes Passes Away (Ivan Dixon)

Hogan's Heroes Passes Away (Ivan Dixon)-76 years old Ivan Dixon passed away on March 16 in Charlotte, NC after a hemorrhage and complications from kidney failure.

Ivan Dixon was an Afro American actor and director. He also was the owner-operator of radio station KONI-FM in Maui, Hawaii.

He passed away at the Presbyterian Hospital which earned an Emmy nomination for his performance in the CBS Playhouse special “The Final War of Olly Winter”.

Ivan Dixon helped change racial stereotypes in his film and TV roles. He was active in the Civil Rights movement and president of Negro Actors for Action.

Dixon may be best known for his role as POW Staff Sergeant James Kinchloe in the hit TV series Hogan's Heroes. SSG Kinchloe's role was the communications officer; he would frequently be ordered by Colonel Hogan (portrayed by Bob Crane) to encode a message and send it to Allied Headquarters in London, a submarine, or to the German underground. Ivan Dixon played Kinchloe from 1965 to 1970, making him the only original actor on Hogan's Heroes not to stay for the entire series (Hogan's Heroes finished in 1971, by which time Kenneth Washington had replaced him).

He also directed a lot of television, including episodes of Magnum, P.I., Quantum Leap, The Greatest American Hero, The A-Team, Tales of the Gold Monkey, The Rockford Files, Wonder Woman, The Waltons, The Rookies, Quincy, M.E., McCloud, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Starsky & Hutch, Airwolf, and many others.
