hound dog lyrics-The 2008 season at the Flat Rock Playhouse will include everything the Playhouse audience has come to enjoy: Music, mystery, comedy, drama and more. Maintaining a long tradition of exemplary theatre, this 56th season features an amazing lineup of extraordinary selections. Tickets to all shows go on sale beginning March 26.

Opening the Flat Rock Playhouse 2008 Professional Season is Dames At Sea with book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller and music by Jim Wise. In Dames At Sea, New York salutes Hollywood in this affectionate spoof of the 42nd Street-style musical of the '30s. Charmingly reminiscent, Dames At Sea is a show within a show with a hardboiled leading lady, tap dancing babes, handsome sailors and a stage on the deck of a battleship. Dames At Sea is on stage April 30 through May 18.

The second production is Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks by Richard Alfieri. When Lily hires Michael to give her dance lessons, the two offend each other right off the bat. Off to a rocky start, the prickly pair foxtrot, cha-cha and tango until a most unlikely friendship develops through the discovery that the two are more alike than not. Feisty, witty and on stage May 21through June 7, Hollywood Reporter calls Six Dance Lessons "thoughtful, razor sharp, charming, funny and genuinely moving."

A classic musical

The Playhouse will bring in the summer with Meet Me In St. Louis with songs by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane and book by Hugh Wheeler. Meet Me In St. Louis is based on The Kensington Stories by Sally Benson and the MGM motion picture. The World's Fair is coming soon -- and so is a world of changes for the Smith family. This classic movie musical, which starred Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien features show-stopping dance numbers and a treasured score which includes The Boy Next Door, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and, of course, The Trolley Song, is on stage June 11 through 29.

Alone Together Again by Lawrence Roman, a comedy for the Baby Boom generation, is on stage July 2 through 19. In this charming sequel to the hilarious comedy, Alone Together, Helena and George Butler are a couple sandwiched between the demands of their aging parents and their growing children. Having eagerly looked forward to the peace, the quiet and the privacy of an empty nest, their home becomes a revolving door of dysfunction as their parents, suitcases in hand, descend upon their tranquility bringing a noisy confusion of robots, explosions, and considerable comic turmoil.

All Elvis

At the half-way point of the season is All Shook Up, inspired by the music of Elvis Presley with book by Joe DiPietro. Set in Smalltown, USA, circa 1955, "a rolling roustabout with a song in his soul and an eye for the ladies" rambles into town on his motorcycle and unhinges the locals repressed behavior, bringing romance, rebellion and rock-n-roll into their lives. Showcasing 25 Elvis tunes including Heartbreak Hotel, Burning Love, Jailhouse Rock, Don't Be Cruel and Hound Dog, All Shook Up mixes a little bit of Shakespeare with a whole lot of the King, guaranteeing that the entire family will be jumpin' out of their blue suede shoes. On stage July 23 through Aug. 17.

Agatha Christie's classic And Then There Were None is on stage Aug. 20 through Sept. 7. From the queen of the detective genre comes a tale of 10 strangers -- a former nanny, a surgeon, a detective, an elderly spinster, a retired General, a Judge, a soldier of fortune, a wealthy socialite, the housekeeper and her husband -- all brought to an island by a mysterious host. Each possess a deadly secret and now find themselves trapped as the subjects of a cruel game.

On stage Sept. 10 through 28 is Unnecessary Farce, a brand new farce by Paul Slade Smith. Two hotels rooms, one video camera, and eight slamming doors set the stage in this modern-day comedy. As two bumbling but likeable cops operate a sting operation to catch a crooked mayor, the plot weaves through a series of unbelievable mix-ups and mayhem. Unnecessary Farce is a laugh-out loud comedy with one silly bit overlapping the next.

The heartwarming drama, Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom and Jeffrey Hatcher is based on the runaway best seller that changed millions of lives. Onstage Oct. 1 through 19, Tuesdays With Morrie is a loving memoir to Morrie Schwartz, a college professor who helped Mitch Albom see the world as a more profound place, giving him sound advice that helped him make his way through the maze of life.

In addition to the eight show professional show series, Flat Rock Playhouse will showcase two productions featuring the talents of the YouTheatre students. This spring is Billy, Goat, Gruff --The Musical with book and lyrics by Gwen Edwards, and music by YouTheatre alumnus, Ben Mackel. On stage April 11 through 19, the YouTheatre jazzes up the classic fairy tale for modern audiences with hummable songs and hilarious characters. This adaptation of "Three Billy Goats Gruff" is a nice updating of the old story about three goats who outsmart a nasty troll. The title for the fall YouTheatre show, scheduled for Nov. 14 through 23, will be announced later this spring.

Extra-seasonally, the Playhouse will offer a nostalgic look at a country music icon, plus a holiday show, both for the entire family. On stage Oct. 23 through Nov. 9 is Hank and My Honky Tonk Heroes written and performed by Jason Petty. Petty, a Nashville veteran and off-Broadway star, has won critical acclaim for taking audiences back in time to the very beginnings of country music in an homage not only to Hank Williams, Sr., but also to other legends: Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubb, the Carter Family, Webb Pierce, Jimmie Rodgers and George Jones. The show features 20 royally entertaining and high-octane renditions of country-music classics, including I'm So Lonesome, Hey Good Lookin', Lovesick Blues, Cold, Cold Heart, Jambalaya, Kaw-Liga. and Your Cheatin' Heart.

Holiday cheer

The closing production of the Playhouse 2008 season will be Dear Santa by Norm Foster onstage Nov. 28 through Dec. 14. Dear Santa travels to the magical, timeless world of the North Pole, replete with offices workshops, elves and of course, the jolly old leader himself. The efficient-but-put-upon Chief of Staff, the dizzy housekeeper, the high-pressure sleigh salesman and the shop foreman keep the place running like clockwork with the exception of a few in-house quirks and foibles.

Flat Rock Playhouse's 2008 season runs from April 11 through Dec. 14. Tickets are on sale beginning March 26. Senior, students and groups discounts are available for nearly all productions. Flat Rock Playhouse is at 2661 Greenville Highway across from the Sandburg Home in Historic Flat Rock.
