The Westminster Kennel Club Opens Dow Show Today

The Westminster Kennel Club 132nd Annual Dog Show opens today at Madison Square Garden in New York.

In the Dog Show World, The Westminster Kennel Club is like the Kentucky Derby, the Indianapolis 500, the Academy Awards, Time's Man of the Year or the Boston Marathon. Out of 2,500 entries, one dog will be named Best in Show.

Four new breeds, recently recognized by the American Kennel Club, are making their debuts at Westminster in 2008. They are the Plott hound, the Tibetan Mastiff, the Beauceron, and the Swedish Vallhund.

The 132nd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show starts Monday at Madison Square Garden in New York and will last for two nights.

The opening night will be broadcasted on the USA Network at 8pm, then switches to CNBC from 9-11pm. The closing night will air on USA Network from 8-11pm.

Four new breeds, recently recognized by the American Kennel Club, are making their debuts at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in 2008. They are the Plott hound, the Tibetan Mastiff, the Beauceron, and the Swedish Vallhund.

All Hound, Terrier, Non-Sporting and Herding breeds and varieties will be judged on Monday, with Groups judged on Monday evening.

All Sporting, Working, and Toy breeds and varieties will be judged on Tuesday, with Groups judged on Tuesday evening. Best In Show will also be judged on Tuesday evening.

Junior Showmanship preliminaries will be judged each afternoon, with the finals to be held at 7:30PM on Tuesday evening.

169 breeds and varieties will be judged in seven different groups during the day Monday and Tuesday. There are 2,500 dogs competing in the dog show this year.
